Lay a Foundation

Help lay a foundation for your family to come to know the Lord.

These things are especially good to do from the time your children are wee little ones, but they are also beneficial to begin today no matter what your children's ages are.

1) Train your family to constantly turn their gaze UPWARD toward God. Use your finger and frequently point UPWARD to Him. This helps to give God a 'location' OUTSIDE of you and your family. This can help to keep them from constantly looking inward to themselves or solely to you the parents for everything, and instead help engender an upward look to their loving God for help and all they need.

2) Cultivate in them the CERTAINTY of God's existence by living in a manner that shows your own certainty of His love and care in your life. Share with your family as you are comforted, encouraged, or strengthened in Him.

3) Speak of the Lord often and help your family become AWARE of His PRESENCE. Help them to begin to understand God's NEARNESS to them.

4) Teach your family ABOUT GOD. Tell them He is everywhere (omnipresent), He knows everything (omniscient), and He is our all powerful (omnipotent) Creator. Tell them of His love and how He watches over us, taking perfect care of us, as He knows is best.

5) Point out His CREATION to them… the animals, plants, stars, and mountains He has made, etc. This can help them become aware of His awesome POWER and help them at least begin to understand the honor, glory, and thanksgiving that are due Him alone.

6) In your family's presence - YOU speak to God, YOU worship Him, YOU pray to Him, YOU give Him audible thanks, etc. This will help give your family an awareness of God hearing us, and His COMMUNICATING with us.

7) FILL YOUR LIFE AND HOME with things pertaining to the Lord. Read the Bible to your family daily, and refer to what it says throughout the day. Put on praise music and sing to the Lord. Build a godly home library and make it available to all who would like to read about God and what He has done. There is much you can do here.

8) TAKE YOUR FAMILY ALONG with you as you walk with the Lord and serve Him. This will help them see the pattern of a life lived for Him.

9) Speak to your family in terms of their (already) knowing, loving, and serving the Lord. Engender in them a sense of their being His, their being accountable to Him, and that they DO want to and WILL come to know, love, and serve Him for the rest of their days. (More on this issue at another time.)

10) Train your family to choose things that will always lead them TOWARD the Lord, and not away from Him.
