Our Great God:  Our Great God Is...

Intro

Our Great God is... Able

He is perfectly able to do whatever He pleases.

-  ...our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire... (Dan 3:17b)

-  ...the King of heaven... is able to humble those who walk in pride (Dan 4:37b).

-  Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy (Jude 24).

-  But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases (Ps 115:3).

Our Great God is... Awesome

He is revered, dreadful, fearful, terrible (all in a reverential sense).

-  ...the Lord your God is in your midst, a great and awesome God (Dt 7:21b).

-  ...O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God... (Neh 1:5b)

-  And I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed and said, "Alas, O Lord, the great and awesome God..." (Dan 9:4a)

Our Great God is... Enduring

He is abiding, steadfast, sure, enduring.

-  ...Thou dost endure... (Ps 102:26b)

-  ...men are to fear and tremble before the God of Daniel; for He is the living God and enduring forever... (Dan 6:26b)

Our Great God is... Eternal, Everlasting

He is eternal, everlasting, perpetual, without beginning or end.

...from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God (Ps 90:2b).

-  ...the everlasting God... (Is 40:28b)

-  ...the eternal God... (Rm 16:26b)

Our Great God is... Exalted

He is risen up, lifted up over all things.

-  ...I will sing to the Lord, for He is highly exalted... (Ex 15:1b)

-  Behold God is exalted... (Job 36:26a)

-  ...for the shields of the earth belong to God; He is highly exalted (Ps 47:9b)

Our Great God is... Faithful

He is trustworthy and will always do what He has said He will do.

-  ...the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant… (Dt 7:9a)

God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord (1 Cor 1:9).

-  No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able... (1 Cor 10:13a)

Our Great God is... (Perfect in) Foreknowing

He knows all things beforehand perfectly.

-  ...declaring the end from the beginning... (Is 46:10a).

-  According to the foreknowledge of God the Father… (1 Pt 1:2a)

-  …your Father knows what you need, before you ask Him (Mt 6:8b).

All prophecy in the Bible proves God's perfect foreknowledge. (Example: Acts 3:18)

Our Great God is... Holy

He is morally pure, completely separate from all that is sinful.

-  "To whom then will you liken Me that I should be his equal?" says the Holy One (Is 40:25).

-  But like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." (1 Pt 1:15-16)

-  Thine eyes are too pure to approve evil, and Thou cannot look on wickedness with favor (Hab 1:13a).

Our Great God is... Immortal

He alone possesses deathlessness.

-  ...[God] alone possesses immortality... (1 Tim 6:16a)

Notes

: Those in right relationship with God (those saved) will be given / will put on immortality, but God alone possesses it.

Our Great God is... Immutable

He is unchanging, unchangeable in Being.

-  For I, the Lord, do not change… (Mal 3:6a)

-  …the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow (Js 1:17b).

Our Great God is... Infinite

He is limitless, measureless, uncontainable, filling the heavens and earth.

-  ...heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain Thee… (1 Kng 8:27b)

-  ...Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?" declares the Lord (Jer 23:24b).

-  ...Him who fills all in all (Eph 1:23b).

Our Great God is... Inscrutable

He is unsearchable, past finding out, unfathomable, unknowable in the sense of knowing everything about Him.

-  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts (Is 55:9).

-  ...how unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! (Rm 11:33b)

Notes

: Yet He has kindly revealed certain things about Himself to mankind.

Our Great God is... Invisible

He is not seen, not visible.

-  To the King… invisible… (1 Tim 1:17)

Notes

: Yet, the invisible God has been seen in Jesus Who is God Himself.

-  And He [ Jesus] is the image of the invisible God… (Col 1:15a)

Our Great God is... Omnipotent

He is all powerful (omni = all + potent = power).

-  I know that Thou can do all things, and that no purpose of Thine can be thwarted (Job 42:2).

-  But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases (Ps 115:3).

-  …with God all things are possible (Mt 19:26b).

Notes

: Omnipotence deals with His power, sovereignty deals with His rule.

: [all] Power belongs to God (Ps 62:11).

Our Great God is... Omnipresent

He is everywhere, all present, all places at all times (omni = all + presence).

Where can I go from Thy Spirit? Or where can I flee from Thy presence? ...Thou art there (Ps 139:7,8b).

-  The eyes of the Lord are in every place, watching the evil and good (Pr 15:3).

Notes

: A related word is 'Immanence' which refers to God being near to us.

: An important related concept is 'Transcendence' which means He is other than, and separate from, His creation.

Our Great God is... Omniscient

He is all knowing (omni = all + science = knowledge).

-  Great is our Lord, and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite (Ps 147:5b).

-  …He knows the secrets of the heart (Ps 44:21b).

-  God… knows all things (1 Jn 3:20).

Our Great God is... Self-Existent

He has life in Himself, draws unending energy from Himself, is uncreated, independent (of time or space), not accounting to anyone for His being.

-  And God said… "I AM WHO I AM." (Ex 3:14) (KJV "I AM THAT I AM.")

-  …the Father has life in Himself… (Jn 5:26a)

-  ...[God] gives to all life and breath and all things… (Acts 17:25b)

Notes

: Theological term is 'aseity' (Latin: a se = 'from Himself').

Our Great God is... Self-Sufficient

Everything is His, so He has no need of anything.

-  If I were hungry, I would not tell you; for the world is Mine, and all it contains (Ps 50:12).

-  Neither is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all life and breath and all things (Acts 17:25).

Our Great God is... Sovereign

He has absolute rule, ruling everything, completely free, able to do as He wants.

-  …His sovereignty rules over all (Ps 103:19b).

-  ...the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind… (Dan 4:32b)

-  ... He who is the blessed and only sovereign... (1 Tim 6:15b) (KJV potentate)

-  ...[God] works all things after the counsel of His will… (Eph 1:11b)

Notes

: Sovereignty deals with His rule, omnipotence deals with His power.

Our Great God is... Transcendent

Being the Creator, He is other than and separate from His creation.

-  In the beginning God created… (Gen 1:1a)

-  In the beginning was the Word… and the Word was God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being (Jn 1:1,3).

-  For by Him [Jesus] all things were created… (Col 1:16a)

Notes

: Our great God is also Immanent - always near to us, not distant from us.

Intro

The above Bible facts speak to Who our great and awesome God is and what He does. These facts are usually gathered under the heading of God's Attributes.

Some of these are considered by theologians to be His incommunicable attributes (those which mankind cannot share in because they are intrinsically God's by His very nature).

Some are considered to be His communicable attributes (those which mankind can share in or exhibit - though only to an infinitely lesser degree).

Some speak to what He does and some give a description of Him. All are excellent to learn toward knowing Him better.

It is our hope (and plan, D.V.) to continue adding to these in the near future, so this page is not considered finished.

(So why'd we put this intro way down at the bottom of the page? Because we didn't want to distract you from reading about Him first!)
